red giant: Through the nuclear
fusion processes that convert
hydrogen to helium, a star gradually
consumes the hydrogen in its core.
When most of the hydrogen has been
depleted, the star’s core contracts
while its outer regions expand and
cool, ultimately creating a red giant
star. Billions of years from now,
when our own Sun becomes a red
giant, the Earth will be enveloped
and destroyed.
